Mordenkainen is a mage of considerable power who was revealed to the members of The Eternal Order during the Battle of Toldoth. As he confirmed in a later conversation, during this battle, Mordenkainen summoned a host of Devils, including Moloch himself to fight the Demons that were flooding into the town. This was actually not the first time The Eternal Order crossed Mordenkainen's path, however. A Magistery party came across what could only be described as an experiment, apparently put in place by Mordenkainen that had resulted in a group of Trolls gaining limited intelligence, adopting a young red dragon wyrmling, naming it Garnet, and then becoming encrusted (along with Garnet and the cave in which they lived) with living gems. Due to overzealous truth-telling, and a terrible misunderstanding, the party was forced to eliminate the Trolls in self-defense. They were able however, to harvest some of the gems, and to save and tame the young dragon Garnet (See Recollections). A return to the cave to investigate the progress of the gem investigation revealed a note from -M (who we now know as Mordenkainen) who admonished us to not destroy his experiments, should we encounter them in the future. ==Wisdom of Mordenkainen== Some members of The Eternal Order were able to meet Mordenkainen outside The Brown's chambers in the wake of the Battle of Toldoth below is a summary of what they learned from him in this short meeting: *Some of the Magister's who had participated in the battle, disappeared into the portal to Avernus at its conclusion. Mordenkainen believes these Magisters, including a Blue named Felicia who had alerted us to the call to reinforce Toldoth, had chosen their words with the Devils poorly. "I'm sorry, but if I had to guess" Mordenkainen stated, "she probably said something binding and a devil with the ability to seal contracts bound her to it immediately." *The Artifact that powers the Training Dungeons, also apparently known as The Codex, is in fact a powerful magical item known as Mystryl's Knot. Mordenkainen was not pleased that it had been left vulnerable in our absence from the Magistery. "You have Mystryl's Knot here in the tower and you left it completely unguarded? I knew you were all rash, but by Baphomet's big ones, you need to keep a closer eye on your house." *It is likely that some entity from The Far is attempting to reach our plane through Mystryl's Knot. "You're probably close, something or someone from the outside would be my guess. Maybe you should all remember why you are all here in this tower." *It also seems that the recent incursion of Demons into our plane at the Battle of Toldoth is part of a larger plot to sow the seeds of Chaos, that also includes the Silence of Lolth and its ripple effects on our plane. "Chaos weaves an unknowable web, but I do my best to keep it from netting the realm into insanity. There is most certainly a larger plot driving these things, I would encourage you to figure out how, and then let me know when you do." *Danifae is perhaps more dangerous than we have previously believed. She is responsible not only for the Plot by the Black Ice Gang to release the Chaos Curse, and the pending invasion of our plane by forces from the Underdark, but she is also responsible for the Portal from the Abyss that brought the demon hordes to Toldoth. " Danifae Yauntyrr. Yes, she opened the portal in Toldoth. Danavus chased after her into the Abyss. Danifae has a substantial amount of power, the day may come when I have to end her life, but...it is not this day." *He also has special relationship with dragons (or at least some of them): Jeroy - points at Ember with Garnet hiding under her coat - "Archmage - do you want to say hello to your old dragon before you leave?" Mordenkainen - looks at Jeroy without pausing - "I did."
