Mordenkainen is a mage of considerable power who was revealed to the members of The Eternal Order during the Battle of Toldoth. As he confirmed in a later conversation, during this battle, Mordenkainen summoned a host of Devils, including Moloch himself to fight the Demons that were flooding into the town. This was actually not the first time The Eternal Order crossed Mordenkainen's path, however. A Magistery party came across what could only be described as an experiment, apparently put in place by Mordenkainen that had resulted in a group of Trolls gaining limited intelligence, adopting a young red dragon wyrmling, naming it Garnet, and then becoming encrusted (along with Garnet and the cave in which they lived) with living gems. Due to overzealous truth-telling, and a terrible misunderstanding, the party was forced to eliminate the Trolls in self-defense. They were able however, to harvest some of the gems, and to save and tame the young dragon Garnet (See Recollections). A return to the cave to investigate the progress of the gem investigation revealed a note from -M (who we now know as Mordenkainen) who admonished us to not destroy his experiments, should we encounter them in the future.
