And so it begins… | |||
It’s been two weeks since I’ve been accepted into the Magistery. I met a few of the other initiates but decided to keep to myself for the time being. My goal here is to learn everything that I can to help better the world. At the same time I need to become stronger. I need to be prepared for when I finally find The Other…The Pretender…
With some prodding, I got suckered into a training dungeon by Jorg and Chad. Jorg is a brutish looking knight of some noble house while Chad is…. I actually don’t know how to properly describe Chad. He was loud and obnoxious and I wanted to hit him every time he spoke… Joining us were a pair of gnomes, Gerald and Zanna, though I think I mistook them as dwarves or goblins at first. Oops.. There was also Avant, a quiet and stoic looking human, and Coin, a peculiar orphan of some sort. Together we ventured out to Braze’N’Bold, a pub that seems to be a favorite amongst the other initiates. After a couple of rounds we headed back to the Magistery to begin the so-called training dungeon. There we ran into Grandmaster Metaphysicae who I didn’t give the best first impression to. I’m sure that’s going to eventually come back to haunt me. I forgot to mention that the others started to question me on what I can do. I tried to stupidly show off by casting Blade Ward on Jorg (I forgot that I can only cast it on myself) and then trying to hit him with my quarterstaff (I missed…horribly). So again, great first impressions to all but after living in the wild for so long I’ve kind of forgotten how to interact with people.
Anyway, training dungeon. Save the poltergeist. That’s all I remember of what we needed to accomplish. The dungeon started off pretty low key. Dusty and old, it fit well with the whole crypt – poltergeist thing. We ran into some rats that Avant and Jorg quickly dispatched though the others didn’t get to see me light their entire nest on fire. Farther into the dungeon we found sarcophaguses…sarcophagi…coffins. We found some coffins and were promptly attacked by a mummy. Jorg took point again and with some help from Zanna quickly dispatched said mummy. I did have to patch Jorg up a little bit due to some sort of necrotic something or other that he contracted from the mummy. After the fight, we inspected the coffins to find that there was what looked to be a family of four buried here in the crypt though the mother’s body was nowhere to be found. We found a child, the father, and another male figure, the mummy who originally attacked us. Moving deeper into the dungeon, we had our first encounter with the poltergeist. Chad was taken for a ride and was promptly knocked out. It took every ounce of my strength to keep from falling over in laughter but I kept my composure and opted to heal him instead.
Here is where things get a little blurry. There was something about the mother being raped and giving birth to the child who was supposed to be the next reincarnation of someone named Salim. The uncle, who turns out to be the mummy who attacked us, killed the child and father. We learned all of this through the carvings on the wall and with Coin talking to the poltergeist. Coin then pissed off the poltergeist who in turn takes out Chad (for the third time), Zanna, and me with some skeleton army. Not exactly sure how we got out of the fight but I awoke to find myself 60 gold richer. I also lost my top knot. God damned skeleton…
P.S I really do not like Chad…

After a near death experience from the last training dungeon I realized that I was in no shape for a real world encounter. I need more training before I can feel comfortable with what the real world might throw at me and my mission within the Magistery. I make time to meet with some of the other initiates I met on 6/28. I finish up my daily duties and find Kaylorr, Avant, Gerald, Jorg and Coin (no surprise there), in the library finishing up. I also see a face I have not seen before. We all get reacquainted and I learn that this new face goes by the name of Chad, or Best Chad. I am still not sure which name to address him by. After our painfully awkward greetings (some of us really don’t like people or just don’t have people skills) Jorg suggests that we all go to a tavern to grab a pint and get to know each other a little better. We find our way to the local initiate’s watering hole The Braze'N'Bold where we see Baern and Bimpnottin having a pint. After Chad/ Best Chad yells over to Baern and Bimpnottin in a boisterous manner, they clearly want nothing to do with him. We find ourselves in another painfully awkward moment. To break the tension Jorg offers to buy a round for the table. Although I did appreciate the gesture I am a little overwhelmed by the task in front of me. Jorg comes back to the table with seven pints of ale. I tried very hard to keep up but trying to consume a glass of anything that is the size of my torso proves to be difficult. After a few more rounds for the other big people, a little more mingling and a fascinating discussion about how rain water is collected in Solace (I kind of get why they do it this way, but I still don’t understand why these city folk hate getting rained on) we decide to start our training dungeon.
We head back to the library to meet up with Grandmaster Metaphysicae to receive our amulets and start the training dungeon. Our mission is to save the poltergeist. Thinking back on my last experience in a training dungeon I express my concern of checking for traps to my new friends. We cautiously go down into the dungeon. It smells like an old dusty crypt and feels like one too. We come across an alcove that once looked like it was a lush garden but is now dead and decayed. As we proceed further lead by Chad/Best Chad and Avant, Chad hears some noises coming from around the corner and Avant goes cautiously to check it out. It was rabid rats pouring out of a hole in the ground Avant quickly starts attacking and Chad/Best Chad quickly follow. (I don’t understand why their first instinct is to go right for the violence.) As they are attacking I go up to one of them and ask what was going on. The only response I get from the rat is “fresh flesh”. There was something seriously wrong with these rats. With more smashing of rats from the big people and a fire ball down the hole they are coming from, we successfully take care of the rat situation. We turn another corner to find a mummy. Jorg runs up to attack it. Something happens to him (didn’t see what) and he doesn’t look so good so I take out my short bow and land the killing blow and it drops. (I killed my first mummy!!! That’s pretty cool). We inspect the 4 crypts that are in the room. One is a wrapped person with what looks like ceremonial farming equipment, another one of a smaller person also with farming equipment. One with ceremonial cooking supplies and the last one, the one that the mummy came out of looks to be one of a merchant. There is a scale and 2 coins in that one. Jorg takes both coins and give one of them to Coin.
Further down we come across a giant room with 30 bas reliefs. We have Coin inspect them and tell us all he can surmise. He tells us that it looks like the mother figure was betrayed/raped by a dark figure and gives birth to a child and dies in child birth. The dark figure than comes back and kills the father and takes the child. (Could the poltergeist be the mother? The father? Or the son?) We all feel that it has to be one of the three people laying in the crypts.
Chad/Best Chad than decides to take a look down the hall way at the other end of the room. He is then thrown like a doll half way across the room by something we cannot see. We assume that it is the poltergeist. (In a little bit of a panic and because I thought I thought this would help us figure out who the poltergeist was) I quickly throw up my best interpretation of what I believe the child would look like. (I am not sure why I did that… or how that would give us any answers. I need to work on how I deal with stress under pressure better. That was not my best moment, but it was the only thing I could think of to do.) The poltergeist was not happy and throws Chad/Best Chad’s limp body at me. (That didn’t feel great.) After that no other sign of the poltergeist. Kaylorr tends to Chad/Best Chad and we continue down the hall way as a team. We come across a fountain, but realize that the water in the fountain is not real water but what looks like an illusion of water. Not sure what that mean we continue. In the room behind the fountain we find what my friends tell me is a statue of some God? Bregan. We conclude that, what we thought was the merchant’s tomb was actually symbols for Bregan. (he is some God of balance or something, I can’t keep them all straight to be honest) The mummy that I took out was actually the uncle of the child that was taken, and he was a follower of Bregan.
As we try to piece together what Coin has told us from the bas reliefs and what we have seen in the dungeon we find ourselves back in the room with the reliefs. Somehow Coin ends up communicating with the poltergeist and she materializes. It is the mother?! (:o !!) She is still not happy. (I have not seen many poltergeists in my life, in fact this is the first one and from what I’ve learned, they are NOT happy or friendly.) She summons skeletons and they pop out of the reliefs. (What?! Apparently poltergeists can do that. There is so much about the world that I do not know.) We need to do something and fast! My colleagues and I do the only thing we know how to do, we start fighting them. (Looking back this may have not been the best course of action, we might have been able to do this peacefully.) This is where things get a little fuzzy. All I remember is that I jumped off the wall to attack one of the skeletons but just ended up turning its head 180⁰ followed by doing a flip over his body and popping its head clean off. I land with the skeleton’s head in my arms and get hit. Once again I get knock unconscious. (Popping a head off a skeleton does NOT kill it… noted. I REALLY need to work on not blacking out in dungeons). I wake up with Kaylorr standing over me. Once he sees that I am okay, he is off to revive another person. The fight is over and the simulation is ending. We gather ourselves, it looks like most of us have taken some kind of damage. I sigh in relief that we have completed the dungeon. I later found out that during the dungeon/ flight all of us have had our amulets broken, with the exception of Coin. (I have a feeling he is going to be the exception to most rules) |

Recollections by Jorg edit edit source
After a week of studying, Jorg un'Dal convinces several of his classmates to practice their social skills with an evening together. Brooding Kaylorr, chatty Zanna, honor-less Chad, quiet Gerald, and bookish Coin (or Orphan? it's confusing; just pick one name and write it down) accompanied Jorg to the Braze'N'Bold. At the student tavern, Jorg and his companions were joined by rustic Avant and fellow Magistery initiates Baern Battlehammer and Bimpnottin. Jorg introduced himself and sparked a lively conversation about everyone's goals with the Magistery. Through Jorg un'Dal's social graces, the group became a party and decided to confront their curiosity concerning the Magistery's Training Dungeon. Leaving Baern and Bimpnottin behind, Jorg's party asked the Magistery clerk to summon the Grandmaster Metaphysicae. After struggling with the Grandmaster's hearing impairment (I suppose it would be improper to name him a racist after one comment) Jorg's party was admitted to the dungeon.
The dank crypt was plagued by the poltergeist of the mother of a family. The tomb told the story of a dark character, Salim Farstrider, who seduced the mother. The mother, killed in childbirth, remained behind to haunt the tomb. The husband's brother arrives afterward, kills the child, his own brother, and remains buried next to the child and brother. The mother was not entombed with her family, however.
Jorg un'Dal lead the party into the crypt and destroyed the Rat Fountain with an ingenious smash of his shield and swipes of Avant's morning star. Jorg then charged the Risen Corpse and felled it, with assistance from the party (yes, they assisted me; continue). Surviving the touch of the Mummy, the party learned the story of the unfortunate poltergeist via a series of bas reliefs and a statue of the former deity, Bregan. Choosing a direct approach, as opposed to a more diplomatic solution, Jorg and the party communed with Lydia (yes, the poltergeist had a name). The poltergeist summons 4 skeletons and the true test of endurance begins. Jorg un'Dal flies around the battlefield, defending, attacking, and enduring blows by skeletons and the poltergeist. After watching most of his companions fall, Jorg un'Dal fells Lydia with a final swipe of his long sword. The party defeats the final flesh abomination (it may have been Coin, but I can not recall exactly who) created from the son's remains.
And so concludes our adventure. Well, Franklin, if you were unsatisfied with my recollection of events, you should start accompanying into more risky situations. You'll never learn without experience. What? You're still recording my dictation?! Yes, we're done!

After a near death experience from the last training dungeon I realized that I was in no shape for a real world encounter. I need more training before I can feel comfortable with what the real world might throw at me and my mission within the Magistery. I make time to meet with some of the other initiates I met on 6/28.
