Rather than waste your time re-telling the whole story that Resik has told, I will skip to the part only I know and my recollection of our interrogation. Rezik heals me and takes off after Kaanyr who had climbed up onto a nearby rooftop. I roll over, do 5 push ups and then stand to seek my revenge. I turn to my right to see Kaanry's companion, a small and elderly drow, crawl out of his portal and begin to walk away. I charge after him, drawing my Soulmate and in a barbarian rage I plunge Soulmate down into his flesh twice. Each swing fell true but this drow, who's skin was noticeably dry, turns to me seemingly unphased by the strikes to only calmly say "Fighting is beneath the house of Dyrr" and continued to walk away. I suddenly feel that I have become paralyzed as I feel my joints and bones begin to stiffen. I try to shake it off but to no avail (evail?) until the battle is over Kaanyr was killed and Dyrr was gone. As the spell lifts I feel that I have aged 40 years as my skin is wrinkled and my joints and bones stiffened with age. I want the head of Dyrr on a spike.
I will jump to the interrogation with Kaanyr, this is what I recall from our chat: 1. He is monitoring the artifact which is in the training dungeons 2. Their side has an illithid monitoring the training dungeon to invade the magistry 3. The companion was Lord Dyrr of the house Aganak Dyrr 4. There are at least 4 more cell leaders 5. Lord Dyrr is working in the temple district 6. Danifae is the cell leaders mistress 7. Nimor is shepherding Drow from the underdark to the portals 8. Imphraezle is collecting ingredients for the choas curse 9. They are all trying to escape Menzoberranzan as the silence of Lolth is casting them into confusion, she has forsaken them 10. He and the other cell leaders answer to Danifae 11. He paid off people to enter Solace 12. Nimor is responsible for bringing the messages of cell leaders back to the underdark. 13. The Staff of Whitering is Lord Dyrr's 14. Danifae - One of the most powerful, she is the head of house Yauntyrr. May be a devine caster. She will be the last to arrive after the release of the Chaos Curse. 15. Nimor - Mercenary from Brigardarth, also an Assassin. 16. Imphaezle - A chaotic Wizard who volunteered for their role rather than be ordered. 17. Lord Dyrr's role was to penetrate the seat of influence in the temples while Kaaryn's was to infiltrate the seat of power in the Magistery.
Recollections by Jeroy
Recollections by Rezik
These cell leaders are becoming more and more annoying. Thankfully, the others were able to track down Hune and Valas, and we had decided it was time to find Kaanyr.
We didn't know much about Kaanyr, other than the hint "Magistery". I decided I should start investigating this, my fears that the Magistery had been compromised.
Tracking Kaanyr
I started tracking people's coming and goings, but overtime Reshi, an adept, noticed what I was doing. She confided in me that she had been researching the cell leaders and had found the locations of most. She wanted to collect more data before she shared it widely, but would tell me where to find Kaanyr, as long as I promise two things - 1: we promised to wipe Kaanyr out of existence and 2: we report our findings back to her first.
I agreed to Reshi's terms and we began tracking Kaanyr. He was hiding in the Temple of Corellon, as a devotee of Corellon. We wouldn't be able to enter the barracks style cleric's bedchambers, so we knew we would have to track where he was going and follow him before capturing him.
The First Plan
I relayed the information to Avant, Coin, Ford, and Jeroy. We quickly hatched a plan. Coin and I would follow Kaanyr out of the Temple of Corellon and follow him. Avant, Ford, and Jeroy would stay at the bottom of the portal to the temple district, waiting for Coin and I before follow Kaanyr all together. Our goal was to watch him and attempt to take him if he entered a quiet alley or area of the town. Obviously, our plan did not go well.
It All Went to Shit
It started out well enough. Coin and I were able to follow Kaanyr through the temple district and down the portal. We continued to follow Kaanyr, while Avant, Ford, and Jeroy followed closely behind.
It was going well until Kaanyr suddenly turned and walked into an alley and disappeared. We saw a large spider at the end of the alley. Coin's familiar Owlie (a terrifying “not” owl) killed the spider. It bled purple, I'm not sure if that's significant.
Regardless, as soon as Coin's familiar attacked the spider, I felt a sword pushed through my belly. It's definitely one of the worst feelings in the world. I guess the bright side is that it was quick, I fell unconscious from the blow.
I woke up to Jeroy or Ford (I don't remember who) pouring a health potion into my mouth, to bring me back. It seems Kaanyr disappeared while I was out.
Trying Again
Now, I was determined. We were going to find this guy and make him pay.
We knew he was going to stalk the Magistery, so we made our way there to look for him. As luck would have it, we saw him without him seeing us. He was perched on the second floor of a building just watching the Magistery.
The Second Plan: Invisibility + Bull Rush
This is where we hatched our second plan. We knew that we couldn't all get up to Kaanyr without him hearing us. So instead, we decided to bring Kaanyr down to us.
The plan was for me to cast invisibility on Jeroy and then have him climb up the building, and then bull rush Kaanyr off the building where we would all be waiting.
The Plan in Action: Obviously It Didn't Work
Like the first plan, it all started out great. Jeroy was able to make it up the building without falling off or alerting Kaanyr to the fact that he was climbing the building.
Once Jeroy got to the top, it all fell apart. It turns out Kaanyr wasn't alone. There was another with him. Jeroy decided - “Well I'm already here, let's just push both of them off”.
He started running (not so quietly) and tried to use his axe to push Kaanyr and his friend off the building. Half that plan worked.
Jeroy was able to push Kaanyr's friend (Lord Dyrr, we find out later) off the building, but not Kaanyr. Kaanyr spectacularly jumped over Jeroy and landed on his feet on the building, while Lord Dyrr and Jeroy lay sprawled out on the ground.
The rest of us quickly went to work, attempting to grapple and hold Lord Dyrr. We were able to get him when suddenly out of everything went to shit again.
Jeroy Down & Bleeding Out
While we focused on Lord Dyrr, we assumed (wrongfully) that Kaanyr wasn't a threat. He was on the top of another building after all.
We were right until he suddenly jumped off the building and stabbed Jeroy with his rapier. We saw Jeroy instantly go cold and start to bleed out. We knew, we had to help Jeroy, lest he become one of his own ancestral guardians.
When we began to focus on Kaanyr, Dyrr created a portal and disappeared. We assumed he was gone (spoiler, we were wrong).
We began attacking Kaanyr, but we all kept missing. It's like no matter how hard we tried, we just couldn't connect. We slowly whittled down Kaanyr, but he was able to get away from us. He started to run away climbing a building to get away.
While everyone else gave chase, I ran over to Jeroy and poured a health potion down his throat. He got back up and then I followed everyone else, after Kaanyr. (Jeroy decided to follow Dyrr, who had disappeared at the start of the fight, that story is his to tell).
We followed Kaanyar, but he ran across the building and down into an alley, disappearing (as usual). We kept trying to search for him, when Coin had a great idea to use Detect Magic to try and find the sneaky bastard. (Great idea Coin).
He's Finally Down, But So Am I
We found Kaanyr hiding right by us in the alley, surrounded by Coin, Ford, and Avant. Again, no matter what we did, we had a hard time hitting Kaanyr, it was as if Tymora was against us.
I joined the fray and began attacking Kaanyr too. He decided that I was a threat and he began attacking me too. Already weakened from his previous attack, Kaanyr was able to quickly down me, but thankfully Coin fire bolted Kaanyr in the face and took him down.
Sneaking Into the Magistery
When I woke up next, we were already in the Magistery. It turns out the ground had snuck Kaanyr into the Maagistery, passed out. It was at this point, we knew we had to get information from him.
We found Reshi and brought her to Kaanyr. We began to interrogate him but got no where. That's when we had the great idea to get Liandrin (head interrogator).
She had us take him to the Lightless Cells where she wrapped a noose around his neck that compelled Kaanyr to tell us the truth and answer all our questions.
What We Learned (Quick Notes)
As you can imagine, we learned a lot.
About Kaanyr
- Kaanyr is known as the Scourge of Ched Nesad, an area near his home in the underdark
- He was scoping out the Magistery to monitor the artifact that powers the training dungeon
The Illithids and the Training Dungeon
- Illithids are trying to control the training dungeon, which would allow them to invade the Magistery
- Their goal is to unseat "The Power" - the Magistery
- The artifact is the key to this invasion
- The illithids are not working with Danifae, they have their own agenda
- There might be hundreds of Illithids working on this - it is not just a single Illithid
- It's important to note that the Illithids somehow started all of this
Escaping the Underdark
- The drow are currently attempting to escape Menzoberranzan, their home in the underdark
- It's currently falling apart due to the Silence of Lolth their goddess
- Since Lolth is silent their divine casters are unable to cast spells
- The drow have tried other planes before but were rejected
- Now they've started to come to Solace
- Their intentions are not pure and you should not consider them refugees, as they are attempting to destroy everything and release the chaos curse
- There have already been thousands of drow ferried, hiding in plain sight
- Hune was in charge of ferrying over the drow from the underdark
- We believe they may be hiding many in what they call the “Little Dark” or what we know as “Old Solace” or the “Undercity”
The Other Cell Leaders
We asked about all of the leaders, but here are the importance pieces from the ones that are still alive.
Danifae
- The head, leader - she is everyone's mistress
- Danifae is also head of house Yauntyrr
- She is a divine caster
- Still in the underdark
- Will arrive after the Chaos Curse is unleashed
Lord Dyrr
- Agrach Dyrr is the name of the house that Lord Dyrr is a part of
- Lord Dyrr was with Kaanyr on the roof of the building, watching the Magistery
- He is currently working in the Temple District attempting to penetrate the "Seat of Influence" (the temples) or so we understand it to be
- Lord Dyrr is a lichdrow that reports to no one (not Danifae like the others)
- The Staff of Withering was given to Hune from Lord Dyrr
- !! Important Note: Lord Dyrr does not like the Illithids. He also did not kill Jeroy when he very easily could have. He may be neutral in this or following another angle?
Nimor
- An assassin and a mercenary of Bregan D'aerthe (more to come on this)
- He is the shepherd between the planes
- He is the courier moving messages and people
- Hune opened the portals, but Nimor is the only one who can return
- Nimor returns messages to Danifae
- The cell leaders don't find Nimor, he finds them somehow
Imphraezl
- Chaotic wizard and no one knows what he is doing
- He was in charge of creating the Chaos Curse and unleashing it
- He would be about collecting the ingredients for it
- He moves his location based on the ingredient he's trying to find
General Questions
We also asked about general intelligence about Menzoberranzan, Ched Nasad, the Underdark, and the Nightshade Kingdom in advance of our journey there.
